In folding box manufacturing, folder gluers are used after die-cutting and are responsible for folding and gluing the die cut blanks to form the box. The configuration you need depends primarily on the type of box you make, the blank dimensions, the material, the production volume, and how frequently you change from one order to another. Looking only at the maximum speed isn't enough. The folding and gluing machine also needs to be suitable for the boxes you actually produce and the way your factory operates on a daily basis.
Start with the Types of Boxes You Produce
The box design is one of the first things to consider, because each design requires different folding sections and a specific configuration. Among the most common box types are:
· Straight-line or side-glued boxes;
· Pre-folded boxes;
· Crash-lock bottom boxes;
· 4-corner boxes;
· 6-corner boxes.
In our ZH series, the configurations are divided according to these applications:
· ZH-X: side gluing;
· ZH-XA: side gluing + pre-fold;
· ZH-XAG: side gluing + pre-fold + crash-lock bottom;
· ZH-XC: side gluing + pre-fold + crash-lock bottom + 4- and 6-corner boxes.
So, before choosing a folder gluer model, it's a good idea to check which boxes you currently make and which ones you plan to start making within a short-term period. If you only work with straight-line snare boxes, a folder gluer with a basic configuration may be enough; if you also need crash-lock bottoms or 4- and 6-corner snare drums, you'll have to choose a more advanced configuration that includes those features.
Check the box size range
After confirming the types of boxes you need to make, check the minimum and maximum dimensions the folder gluer supports for each box type. It's not enough to just look at the maximum working width, because the range can change depending on the box type. For example, one folder gluer doesn't always work with the same sizes for all types of boxes. For example, it might accept a certain size for straight-line boxes, but require a different range for crash-lock bottom boxes or 4&6 corner boxes, because each structure follows a different folding path. Therefore, before choosing a folder gluer model, it's a good idea to have the open box dimensions of the boxes you make most frequently on hand. With this information, you can confirm whether each box type falls within the working range of the configuration you're considering.
Check the Material
Not all folder gluers work with the same range of cardboard, so the material should be checked before choosing a model. The type of board affects feeding, folding, and how stably the machine can work with that blank. Before choosing a folder gluer, check:
· Cardboard type;
· Basis weight or thickness;
· Flute type, if using corrugated board;
· Blank dimensions;
· Box structure/design.
If you work with both paperboard folding cartons and micro-corrugated boxes, check both materials separately. It's not enough for the machine to accept the blank size; it also needs to be compatible with the material and the box structure you're producing.
Don't choose a folder gluer based solely on maximum speed
The speed listed in the technical specifications gives you an idea of the folder gluer's capacity, but in production, not all boxes are processed at the same speed rate. For the folder gluer to keep a stable speed, the box blanks must be fed properly aligned, pass correctly through the folding sections, receive the glue in the correct position, and arrive at the output properly formed. This rate can vary from job to job. The size and material of the box blank, the box design, and the adjustments required for each order can all affect the folder gluer's operating speed.
When comparing models of folder gluers, it's not a good idea to look only at the maximum speed. You should also check if the folder gluer can maintain stable production with the boxes you normally manufacture.
Consider the frequency of job changes
If you make different sizes or types of boxes on the same day, the changeover time between jobs can also affect overall production. Each new job may require adjustments to:
· Guides;
· Belts;
· Folding sections;
· Gluing positions;
· Other machine components.
Some folder gluer models allow for certain adjustments to be made via motor or the control interface, while others require more manual intervention. If you work with long runs of the same product, this point may be less important. But if you change formats several times a day, ease of adjustment can be almost as important as maximum speed.
Cold Glue Application Options
Cold glue is the most frequently used adhesive in the production of folding cartons, but it's not always applied in the same way. Some folder gluers use gluing discs or gluing wheels, which rotate as the blank passes through, applying a continuous line of adhesive to the area that needs gluing. This system works well when the design requires consistent application in a fixed position along the length of the box.
For jobs requiring adhesive application to specific points or lines, cold glue guns connected to an electronic application system can also be used. The nozzles open and close at programmed points to apply glue only where the box design requires it.
Depending on the application, a folder gluer can work with:
· Gluing discs/wheels: suitable for continuous glue application to specific areas of the blank, standard to most folder gluers.
· Cold glue spraying system (with gluing guns): controls the application via nozzles and can be configured according to the required gluing pattern.
The choice depends on the box structure, the material, and the position of the areas to be glued. Some configurations can combine more than one system when the box design requires it.
